Mechanical Engineer
Auckland, New Zealand
Full Time
Zenno is pioneering scalable technology for sustainable space exploration. We’re developing the world’s most powerful and efficient magnetic actuators using superconducting electromagnets.
We maintain a high launch cadence—flying at least one mission per year—and our long-term vision is a future where intelligent machines operate autonomously in space, free from reliance on Earth-based resources.
We’re now expanding our technology to enable fully autonomous magnetic close-proximity operations and formation flight, unlocking capabilities that have never been possible before.
The role
We’re seeking driven and innovative mechanical engineers who’ll own all the thermal engineering challenges of putting a superconducting magnet into space. You will work on:
Designing, analysing, building and testing mechanical engineering solutions to enable efficient superconducting magnet operations in space
Ensure those solutions will survive demanding thermal and space operations: launch, liquid nitrogen temperatures, thermal cycling etc.
Mechanical designs from concept through space flight including requirements definition, architecture trades and block diagrams, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support.
We don’t expect you to be an expert, but you’ll need to be comfortable trying out new things.
Role requirements and preferences
5+ years experience in mechanical engineering and relevant qualification
Demonstrable experience in thermal analysis and design
Experience with professional mechanical and FEA CAD tools, such as Ansys, SolidWorks, Thermal Desktop, etc
Familiarity with thermal architectures including contact resistance, surface finishes and insulation technologies as well as fundamental understandings of orbital thermal control in the space environment.
Experienced with GD&T and CNC manufacturing
Comfortable with hands-on developing hardware, from design and testing, through to prototyping and manufacturing
Bonus: Solid understanding of aerospace processes, standard methodologies, and materials and treatments
We don’t expect you to be an expert at everything. You’ll need to be comfortable trying out new things and asking questions or for help.
You will work collaboratively with engineers of various disciplines and participate in all aspects of electrical hardware development, from requirements definition through design, prototyping, fabrication, testing, and production.
Our culture
We’re a tight, focused startup where you’ll have real ownership and impact. You’ll be the expert in your domain, working closely with a collaborative and mission-driven team.
If you want to help build a radically different future in space, one powered by superconductors and driven by autonomy, we’d love to hear from you.
