About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
The Role
Basis is looking for an outstanding intern to join our team to contribute to Basis’ vision and product by supporting our design team with electro-thermal-mechanical modelling and analysis of upcoming designs.
Working closely with our engineers on this practical engineering project is a great opportunity to support your learning and professional development as your continue your education.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Use your understanding of electrical engineering physical properties such as voltages, impedances, heat generation and transfer to establish models, such as by algebra, spice, or python.
- Work with our engineering team to characterise product operation by test to measure and validate models against real-world performance.
- Work to integrate real-world operational models such as house-hold energy use by time, with product models to predict efficacy of proposed algorithms.
- Use your excellent maths skills to establish algebraic expressions of physical models such that they can be analysed for robustness & stability, simulate, and further expressed in code.
- Work with our engineering team to understand the parameters of operation and how variance effects product performance. Use analysis to explore this space.
- Explore what-if scenarios to understand potential alternative designs and product capabilities using models, simulation and analysis techniques.
- Use industry standard change management tools such as git to ensure organised and well managed workflow.
This is a fixed term, full time role based out of our offices in Sydenham, Christchurch. The position will begin in November and conclude in February and is intended to support students studying a Bachelor of Engineering to obtain their practical hour requirements.

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills or experience:
- Currently enrolled, or have recently studied an Engineering Degree in a relevant discipline at a New Zealand Tertiary Education Institute
- Have the right to work in New Zealand
- Excellent grades in mathematics papers
- Experience with modelling and simulations using Python, Matlab, PSpice or similar
- An understanding of real work signal measurement
- Familiarity with basic acquisition tools such as dataloggers or oscilloscopes
- A basic understanding of signal processing concepts
Please note; applications will be open for two weeks and close COB on Tuesday the 13th of August. Any applications after this date will not be considered.
