About Us
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
The Role
Basis is looking for an outstanding intern to build software models grounded in physics and probabilistic methods to contribute to Basis’ vision and product. Help perceive and control the flow of electrical energy within homes and even entire countries while optimising cost and suggesting how to reduce carbon footprints based on real data. Scale your models to run in the cloud to serve truly valuable and actionable insights for the benefit of many. Be part of a team that generates and presents these powerful real time insights from our cutting-edge platforms.
Some of the things that you might be involved in include:
- Modelling: Selecting or implementing models of energy systems in software that help analyse and predict important information.
- Data Analysis: Implement robust processes for checking the quality of data. Merge diverse data sources from different internal teams and projects
- Prototyping: Assisting our data team with rapid prototyping of new concepts to realise and validate data pipelines.
- Machine Learning: Help implement and evaluate algorithms by building test/train/validation datasets and engineering features.
- Best Practices: You will be helping to establish the processes and documentation systems for robust software development.
- Testing: Setting up and maintaining software test frameworks including continuous integration systems and data QC.
- Code review: reviewing the models and code written with Basis peers to ensure quality, collaboration and conformance.
Working closely with our engineers on this practical engineering project is a great opportunity to support your learning and professional development as you continue your education. This is a fixed term, full time role.
About You
We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills or experience:
- Have studied or be studying at a New Zealand tertiary education institution (Note: students who have completed study overseas are not eligible)
- Be studying science, technology, engineering, design or business
- An ability to write software in at least one of the following languages: C, C++, C#, Rust, Golang, Python, Matlab
- Strong interest in one or more of the following: signal processing, data science, audio/video processing, video game development
- An understanding of the wider system beyond software, and an ability to articulate the impact of systems decisions on software and vice versa
- Strong math skills, experience with data science frameworks within the Python Pandas preferred
You will not be considered for this role if you do not have the right to work in NZ. This is a 3 month, fixed term internship.
Please note; applications will be open for two weeks and close EOD on Monday the 29th of July. Any applications after this date will not be considered.
Benefits
- Laptop, headphones, etc provided for your internship
- Flexible hours - we focus on effort and outcomes, so adjust your hours around your children, hobbies, or other commitments
- Opportunity to attend office events during your internship
- Two-week break at Christmas for you to rest and recharge
- Office dogs
- A chance to work with some of the brightest, most exceptional engineers in NZ!
